Great news for citizens of New Jersey ... and of all states!
New Jersey has joined the growing number of state and local governments to declare an annual Bill of Rights Day. In Joint Resolution No. 8 (1998), the state’s Senate and General Assembly officially recognized that the Bill of Rights "guarantees certain fundamental rights and privileges of individuals" and has served as "a worldwide standard" for safeguarding human rights.
The Resolution requires that the Bill of Rights "be a topic of instruction in the schools of New Jersey" and directs the state governor to call upon public and private entities to celebrate "Bill of Rights Day in New Jersey" each year. Other state and local governments have set December 15 as the date, but New Jersey designated November 20 as Bill of Rights Day because on that date in 1789 the state ratified the Bill of Rights.
New Jersey was the first state to ratify the Bill of Rights. The Bill of Rights was ratified for final inclusion into the Constitution on December 15, 1791.
Credit goes to the Political Union for the Reform of Government Ethics (PURGE) and the Gun Owners of New Jersey (GONJ) for moving the Bill of Rights Day resolution from idea to reality. Those organizations used JPFO materials as an inspiration and followed through to completion.
PURGE reports that it took a sustained long-term push to get the Bill of Rights Day Resolution through the legislature. Supporters were wary that opponents of the right to keep and bear arms would try to kill the bill.
The good news from New Jersey helps all American by keeping up the momentum. Use this news as a springboard to forward Bill of Rights Day in your schools, clubs, town and state.
